Our History
The Thunder Bay Community Growing Project began in the early 1980s as a group of farmers with the goal of supporting the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and their world hunger relief programs. The farmers planted grain, harvested, and shipped the grain to impoverished nations to aid in hunger relief. This model changed in the late 2000s to selling the grain at local elevators, and donating the proceeds earned to Canadian Foodgrains Bank. As the years passed, volunteers found it difficult to coordinate the planting and harvesting in the fields.
In 2022, a newly invigorated committee developed a new strategy of a gala & auction event to raise funds to support Canadian Foodgrains Bank. That year, a successful event raised $5000! In 2023, we added the local hunger relief support. Producers in Thunder Bay area donated animals, which were then processed and donated to five charities in Thunder Bay. Through this initiative, we were able to donate 4000 pounds of locally raised beef and pork to those in need. Along with the local support, we were able to raise nearly $15,000 in support of Canadian Foodgrains Bank to support their global hunger relief efforts!

The volunteer committee, the Thunder Bay agriculture community, our sponsors and supporters continue to support moving into the 2024 year, allowing us to continue our mission to growing a world without hunger one community at a time.

Supporting Hunger Relief in Thunder Bay
Beginning in 2023, our team began to support local hunger relief agencies. In 2023, thanks to the generosity of the Thunder Bay agriculture communities, and through partnership with the Thunder Bay Meat Processing and Woodstar Farm - cattle hauling, we were able to donate 4400 pounds of locally raised beef and 100 pounds of locally raised pork to Thunder Bay hunger relief programs!

Our goal for 2024 is to donate 10,000 pounds!
We donate to the following agencies on a rotational basis:
-
Adult & Teen Challenge - Thunder Bay
-
Dew Drop Inn
-
The Gathering Place
-
Grace Place Thunder Bay
-
Rural Food Cupboard
-
Urban Abbey

How it works:
1. Primary producers donate an animal to the project. (Have an animal to donate? Contact Jason Reid - 807-476-7048)
2. The processing costs (approximately $1000/cow) is fundraised. (Learn how you can help!)
3, The animal is processed and ready for pick up!
4. Charities are notified and can pick up the meat.

New for 2024: Tarrymore Farms has graciously offered to provide eggs to each charity with their meat donation. We are thankful for this partnership to provide additional quality local foods to the charities! We accept any support provided to us and are happy to discuss a partnership with your business if you are interested in donating food items!
